I hear my mama’s voice and I am so ready to go home. It’s taking way too long.  Home. Home. Get me Home Now. Finally, Cindy (the vet tech) comes to get me. Hurry.

Where’s mama? There she is and I jump from Cindy’s arms into mama’s arms. Sweet. She rubs me and kisses my head as she should. Then I get to go in the travel cage and home to Lacy. Yay.

That’s Teddy’s version. Below is the mama’s version:

I waited in the lobby for them to bring Teddy out.  My thoughts were along the lines of, “Wait until the other pet owners see how cute Teddy is.” I imagined he would be sweetly in their arms. Nope. Didn’t happen that way. I didn’t know who would bring him out. But Cindy came out and she had a wild cat in her arms and not the domestic variety. It was twisting and stretching and all around wild. She could barely control the beast.

Yep. If you guessed that was Teddy, then you’d be correct. When Cindy was about a foot or two from me, he leapt into my arms. He snuggled against my chest and then he was so sweet and calm. At least I knew he was healthy, because no way could he have done that yesterday. Oh yeah.  Everyone noticed Teddy just not the way I imagined.

Side note: When I picked Teddy up, Dr. Pursley was his new doctor – she was newly hired and a bunny specialist. Dr. Roberts owns the practice and she knows bunnies, too.

Where is Teddy? Teddy was really sick when mama took him. I wonder if he’ll ever come home to me. I hope he does. I need him.

He used to always bother me to groom (lick) his nose and between his ears. And 99.9% of the time I would. I miss not being able to groom him. Everyday at different times we would snuggle. He’s not here to snuggle with anymore. If there was a scary noise, then he would stand between the danger and me. He is my protector. I love him. I miss him so much.

But now there is only me – mama comes and goes. When she comes home I can smell Teddy and the vet’s office on her. Will Teddy live? I’m so sad…

Day 3 of my incarceration and my 4th evening here.

Mama came to see me again this evening. The only other people here are employees.  They’re letting mama stay late while they clean and stuff.

It feels so good to be on mama’s lap and her soft jacket – part of it’s under me and the rest is on the bench. Mama’s rubbing my head. Yes. This is what I deserve.

Oops. I couldn’t help it the poop just came out on the part of mama’s jacket on the bench. Even accidentally, I’d never poop or potty on mama. It was just little bits. Mama is so excited.

You’d think I could go home now. But no, they want more from me.

It’s now the end of day 2 of my incarceration. Mama comes at least once a day to see me, hold me and rub me.

This evening was tricky. Mama was holding me on her lap and I had to go potty so bad. What’s a bun to do? If I let her know I need to use the litter box, then they’ll put me back into the sick cubicle. That’s no good. And yet I can’t pee on mama. Whew. I figured out what to do. I shifted around on mama’s lap so subtly that she had no clue. Once my buns were hanging over the side of her legs I was able to pee. I  didn’t get any on mama and I don’t think she noticed at all. Though she did mention to the vet tech that there was something to clean up or something. I didn’t quite catch everything that was said because they were transferring me from mama to the vet tech.

They won’t let me go  home until I poop. Maybe things will happen tomorrow.

The next day…

I feel awful. I’m just laying in this cubicle for sick critters. I still don’t feel like eating. The doctor and her helpers stick me with needles and stuff. Then I hear mama. She came back.

Mama came to the back where I am. She held me on her lap and rubbed me. She kept saying, “Poor Teddy. Good brave Teddy. Mama and Lacy love you.”

Life would be even better if I felt better, but at least mama knows her place. Just in case you don’t know where that is – it is with me.

Mama had to go because her lunch hour was over. She left me again.

Where did my mama go? The doctor took me back and did all kinds of things to me. I feel so bad. Okay I felt really bad before the doc took me. Mama should be here.

I don’t feel good. I can hardly hold my head up. Food doesn’t even look good. Mama offers me a piece of  banana. But I just ignore it. Finally, mama picks up my limp body. She pets me and kisses me. Life would be good, but I feel icky.

(Mama’s note: Teddy being lothargic was bad enough, but not wanting any banana caused me to panic. When I held him and rubbed him, I found lumps on his lower belly. Yes. I panicked some more and called the vet.  Dr. Roberts had me bring Teddy in immediately even though she had to stay past office hours to look at Teddy. Teddy had a blockage in his intestine. Everything I’d read about this said that bunnies in this condition needed surgery and had a very low survival rate. Dr. Roberts that she had a non-surgery treatment (this was May 2000). I left Teddy there and went home a very sad mama.)

Something’s up! There are boxes all over the condo.  Lacy has to stick her nose into every box just to be nosy. I, on the other hand, have to check out everything to make sure mama does the right thing – whatever that thing is. It’s so much fun.  Anyway mama’s putting things in the boxes. This is great.

Whatever’s going on Lacy and I are helping every step of the way.

A couple of days later, mama takes Lacy & I to grandma’s. This is strange. Mama has all of our stuff set up over here. Now mama’s boxes are here.

We have a new home.

The best thing in the world is snuggling with Lacy. We lay stretched out next to each other. Pure bliss.

We really don’t need a cage with the door shut.  Especially, after our teen years (which is about 1 year old).  A cage is great for us when we want to escape and have some alone time.  But in general, we want to be where you are, even if we’re napping.  If you really feel the need for a cage with the door shut, then make sure we can stretch out (and we can stretch out further than you think) and stand up (which depends on the size of bun you get). Also, keep the cage in a room where you hang out and it’s safe from other pets and small children.  We can die from a heart attack, even when we’re in a cage and the above said pets and small children scare us.

According to The House Rabbit Society, “Most so-called rabbit treats…” aren’t good for us.  Dried fruit is not good for us bunnies either. Produce and hay are the best treats for us. Yes, this is the same as are regular food, but this is a treat for us.

If your furniture is made out of soft wood, then we will eat it. And boy is it yummy. But when it is made out of hard wood, we can’t sink our teeth into the wood. Sometimes mama puts cardboard between us and the soft wood furniture. The cardboard is tasty, too. And mama says that it’s cheaper to replace. Whatever. Mama gives us wood of our very own that we can chew on to our hearts content. (Mama’s note: Make sure it’s non-toxic wood.)

We need to have our nails trimmed every so often. Mama had the vet do this until she learned how to do this. (Mama’s note: You and the bun have to be comfortable with you holding him and clipping his nails for this to work. There are special clippers to trim buns nails.)

Bunnies need to socialize with another bun and their humans as much as possible. I can’t stress this enough. Mama are you listening? And when Mama rubs me and Lacy licks me at the same time this is the BEST!
