The Life and Times of TeddyBear CondoBunny

Bad news when this bun won’t eat!

I don’t feel good. I can hardly hold my head up. Food doesn’t even look good. Mama offers me a piece of  banana. But I just ignore it. Finally, mama picks up my limp body. She pets me and kisses me. Life would be good, but I feel icky.

(Mama’s note: Teddy being lothargic was bad enough, but not wanting any banana caused me to panic. When I held him and rubbed him, I found lumps on his lower belly. Yes. I panicked some more and called the vet.  Dr. Roberts had me bring Teddy in immediately even though she had to stay past office hours to look at Teddy. Teddy had a blockage in his intestine. Everything I’d read about this said that bunnies in this condition needed surgery and had a very low survival rate. Dr. Roberts that she had a non-surgery treatment (this was May 2000). I left Teddy there and went home a very sad mama.)

Buns on the Move

Something’s up! There are boxes all over the condo.  Lacy has to stick her nose into every box just to be nosy. I, on the other hand, have to check out everything to make sure mama does the right thing – whatever that thing is. It’s so much fun.  Anyway mama’s putting things in the boxes. This is great.

Whatever’s going on Lacy and I are helping every step of the way.

A couple of days later, mama takes Lacy & I to grandma’s. This is strange. Mama has all of our stuff set up over here. Now mama’s boxes are here.

We have a new home.

The best thing in the world is snuggling with Lacy. We lay stretched out next to each other. Pure bliss.

How to Care for a Bunny Part II

We really don’t need a cage with the door shut.  Especially, after our teen years (which is about 1 year old).  A cage is great for us when we want to escape and have some alone time.  But in general, we want to be where you are, even if we’re napping.  If you really feel the need for a cage with the door shut, then make sure we can stretch out (and we can stretch out further than you think) and stand up (which depends on the size of bun you get). Also, keep the cage in a room where you hang out and it’s safe from other pets and small children.  We can die from a heart attack, even when we’re in a cage and the above said pets and small children scare us.

According to The House Rabbit Society, “Most so-called rabbit treats…” aren’t good for us.  Dried fruit is not good for us bunnies either. Produce and hay are the best treats for us. Yes, this is the same as are regular food, but this is a treat for us.

If your furniture is made out of soft wood, then we will eat it. And boy is it yummy. But when it is made out of hard wood, we can’t sink our teeth into the wood. Sometimes mama puts cardboard between us and the soft wood furniture. The cardboard is tasty, too. And mama says that it’s cheaper to replace. Whatever. Mama gives us wood of our very own that we can chew on to our hearts content. (Mama’s note: Make sure it’s non-toxic wood.)

We need to have our nails trimmed every so often. Mama had the vet do this until she learned how to do this. (Mama’s note: You and the bun have to be comfortable with you holding him and clipping his nails for this to work. There are special clippers to trim buns nails.)

Bunnies need to socialize with another bun and their humans as much as possible. I can’t stress this enough. Mama are you listening? And when Mama rubs me and Lacy licks me at the same time this is the BEST!

Well, that’s it for now, but when I think of something that mama should know I’ll let everyone know.

How to Care for a Bunny Part I

I’ve been seeing this question lately.  So, here’s my two cents which should be more like two million dollars since I’m a bunny and know how the care should be.

Anyway, we are very social.  We like to have the companionship of our humans and other bunnies.  I need mama to rub my head and give me her undivided attention.  Also, life was much better once Lacy came to live with us.

We eat pellets, hay, and produce.  Some of us eat more than others.  I love to eat.  Okay, so we don’t always eat food.  Wood and electric cords are very tasty.  Well I could go on and on…(Note from Mama: cord protectors save electric cords and possibly a bunny’s life.)

We like to pee in the same spot all the time.  So, if we start peeing somewhere, then put a litterbox there.  And we like carefresh pet bedding in our litter box. It keeps down odor and won’t hurt us if when we nibble on it.  Apparently, there are other brands on the market.  This is the one mama found and we like it.

Going to the veterinary for a check up is very important.  Finding a rabbit doctor is crucial for your pets survival.  Rabbits are not like any other animal, so your veterinarian needs to understand how our bodies work. Everyone is really nice at my vet’s office and both Dr. Pursley and Dr. Roberts specialize in rabbit health along with other exotics and the more common pets.  Your bunny’s life depends on getting a veterinarian who knows bunnies.

Was grandma’s any better?

So, we get to grandma’s house. And mama sets up my pen in one of the bedrooms. She brought a couple of my litterboxes, hay, food, toys, and water.  I just start to get comfortable when Spanky, a huge dog (mama said she was 12 lbs), came running up to my pen and barked and barked.  This was bad, really bad.  Mama got Spanky out of the room and shut the door.  Safe at last.  Mama came and rubbed my head, so it was worth it.  Well, it would have been better just to get the head rubbing.

When there’s smoke, this bun gets out of Dodge

One day, before Lacy came to live with me, there was the smell of smoke in the air.  Well, this was a different kind of smoke from when mama burned her dinner.  This smoke came through the front door.  The fire was a couple of miles away from us.  So, mama left me all alone when she went to work.  The smoke kept getting a little stronger.

Lucky for me, grandma had fire watch central going on and kept mama updated to the fire.  Finally, grandma told mama, “You’ve got to get Teddy out of there.”  So, mama came home at lunch and scooped me up.  She took all my stuff and off to grandma’s house we went.

Grandma loves me.

Lacy Gets Trapped

Lacy checks out mama to see what she is doing.  Lacy follows right behind mama. I mean right behind her.  Lacy’s whiskers must be hitting mama’s feet.  Anyway mama gets the vaccuum out of the closet and shuts the door.  About 10 seconds later, we hear a banging noise.  What’s that?

Lacy is trapped!  She is throwing her body against the door in an effort to get out.  Mama opens the closet door and finds Lacy in the closet.  That girl bunny is very happy to be free.

Lacy Coos or Snores?

When Lacy sleeps she makes a cooing sound.  It’s a really pretty and relaxing sounding.  Even mama agrees.  Grandma heard it and she said Lacy snores.  I don’t want to be mean, but I stayed over at Grandma’s one night, she and grandpa, now that was snoring.  I thought huge monsters were attacking the house.

What this Bun doesn’t like to eat

I very reluctantly eat:  regular parsley.

I refuse to eat: kale, little white pills no matter how cleverly mama thinks she can disguise the bitter taste, dried fruit and bunny treats from the pet store (this was a good thing as mama found out that they are very bad for bunnies), and orchard grass.
